Class: Real-Time Animation, Spring 2019

This is an installation I made for the second project of my real-time animation class. We had to use AR or VR to create an immersive experience. I was initially having trouble coming up with concept, so I let myself experiment as I learned the basics of SteamVR. For some reason though, during the days I was working on it I had a prayer I used to sing in temple stuck in my head, about how God created the world. So I went along with that.

The user is planted in outer space overlooking a piece of terrain covered in flowers, a “God-like” perspective. By pressing the trigger on one controller you can spawn wooden blocks, which obey gravity; and with the other trigger, you spawn naked floating men, who are endlessly “running,” perhaps running away, but actually getting nowhere. You have total control over the men: you can watch them run aimlessly, grab them, throw them into the void, smash them into each other, trap them with blocks, etc. And the amount of men in the environment affects how bright it is (or dark, rather) — when there are enough men, the world is totally black. Exploring the ideas of power, religion, and feminism, I intend for this to represent the process of how God was “creating the world” if God were to be a woman. She had a little fun with it before things got serious.
